Track newbie. Empty
PostSubject: Track newbie.   Track newbie. EmptyThu May 07, 2009 12:36 am

Hi guys,

Well, no suprises for guessing that I'm Jonny-R's brother. His 106 was my first car and then I got myself a Quiksilver which I still have. I recognise a few of you from 106owners.co.uk, either existing or old users Smile I'd love to get myself on track but I'm in two minds what to do.

Either track the Quiksilver but if I did, it'd need a few comforts kept in it as it'd be a daily driver. Or, I find myself a very cheap base model 1.1 and track it. So a quick question to those of you who go on track with your daily driver... how do the tyres and brakes hold up during a session? Do you go through a set of tyres and/or brakes in one session?

I've made a few changes to the Quiksilver. All the usual bits and nothing you guys haven't seen before Smile Full Supersprint race system (4-2-1, straight through and backbox) + heat wrap, VTR inlet mani, Raceland induction, 106 GTi front brakes, Powerflex lower mount and quickshift. I've got some -45mm Eibach springs, GrpN Billie front shocks and B8 rears to slap on at some stage too.

Of course, if in the future I decide to buy a cheap base model for track only, I should be able to transfer over most of those parts...

Cheers.
David.

At a guess, your Jonny-R's brother Razz

Welcome over mate.

To be honest, it depends how much of a track slag do you feel you want to go.

Something unusual, or something "normal"

I have a honda del sol, which could be a good little track car or track the quickie and have a convertable as a road car. Razz

Anyway, welcome over again Smile

based on personal experience, a few sessions will be fine, on an open pit day expect to go through a set of tyres. you might get 2 or 3 out of a set of brakes

I haven't done to badly tbh, My tyres have done approx 18k now that includes half day at brands hatch and a 15 min session at combe. My road driving is not slow because I don't use the car for work etc. so my evenings are spent on the wrag a few times a week.

However I think after mallory I may have to invest in atleast 2 new tyres.

oh and on the track car question, you would be better off tracking the quicky and getting a 1.1 for road tbh mate. Or if you can stretch to it find a cheapish GTI and track that, they will hold there own quite well as standard with some decent pads on and mod it as and when you can.

Firstly welcome aboard!

Bit confused what you're thinking... tracking a 1.1 or tracking a 1.1 with a different engine?

1.1 you'll be bored after your first Track day, and as for swapping the engines - you can pick up a GTi or S1 XSi cheap enough - just go for one of them.

Or buy something completely different...

Oh and and for having a daily and a trackcar... don't forget that'll mean insuring, taxing and MOTing two cars... unless you plan on towing with the Quicky Razz

absolutely owning more than onecar is hassle but towing the trackslag means you wouldnt have to tax and insure it though you need a decentish size car to tow with. if youcant run to that , tax it for just six months ie the track season and sorn during the winter .

Thanks for the replies. Food for thought.

Norledge, my thinking was getting an old banger of a 1.1 for a few hundred notes and then slowly tracking it. Engine conversion would certainly be on the cards. It's all about getting my hands dirty and learning as I go along Smile

But yeah, on the downside is the hassle of tax, MOT and insurance. I have got access to a trailer but the vehicle that pulls it is a Dodge Dekota so no chance of getting insured on that :p

So I'm leaning towards just sticking the Quiky on track for the time being. See how I get on and if (or more to the point, when) I feel like I need more power then look at buying a project car.

MGM and woz, thanks for the info on how your tyres and brakes hold up.

2000 iirc...

As far as i can understand (with help from rich) the max listed (i.e max weight the trailer can take - plated at, and the kerb weight of the car) weight of the cannot exceed 3.5 tonne while using a normal licence.

So my disco weights 2 tonne, i can tow a trailer with the plated weight of 1.5tonnes... so as long as i can find a trailer which will fit the city on, but plated weight is less than 1.5tonne i'm ok!

Stupid law.
