Speed camera turns Big Brother

A speed camera is on the way which isn't just interested in your speed. It can also reveal a whole host of things about you, your car, your paperwork, and your driving.

So should we be worried?

The speed camera can apparently check your number plate and then run it through the relevant databases (via satellite uplink) to check whether the car insurance and road tax are up-to-date.

At the same time it will take pictures of the inside of the car in order to check whether you are wearing your seat belt.

And it will measure the distance between you and the car in front, to check whether you are driving safely.

All of this will be done in a matter of seconds to get the ball rolling on the multiple fines that many drivers would be clocking up.

The system, known as Asset: or the Advanced Safety and Driver Support for Essential Road Transport, has been funded by the EU and is currently being tested in Finland.

It could hit British roads as soon as 2013, and is ultimately expected to be used in police cars.

wonder who is going to fund the running costs though...councils or Government?

I wonder who is going to fund replacing them?
They will get chopped down/burned like all the rest.

I dont mind checking the documents etc as that will help the police save time and money to do other things like stop criminals.

But the checking your distance. Seriously??? Whats the point in the driving test and such if they are just going to nanny us afterwards.

that distance thing is a very open subject though, as will the camera know what the circumstances are leading to when it actually takes your picture i.e. the car infront just pull out on to you or cut you up?

Exactly, there is no way it will give an acurate example of the conditions. someone might just of braked heavily, there may have been a accident etc.

personally unless the government fund it, I doubt it will go ahead in this country for a while....the councils can't even fund a speed camera.

we might get it, but it wouldn't have all that functionality if they're just going to put it in police cars (which already have half the gear talked about there anyway).

police don't use satellite uplink either so that's new tech that'd have to be funded from somewhere, integrated into the cars......

In Australia i think, they have speed cameras which turn on when activated by a certain amount of decibels, i.e. loud exhausts. There was talk a year or so ago of bringing them to the UK???

Thats ridiculous, I appreciate they're trying to make roads safer etc, but in my opinion its overkill..

But like whats been said, i doubt we'll see them for a long while!
