| Right with all the problems I think this is going to go.
Loved the mr2 but with all the problems its turning out to be more expensive then I can afford.
I think I shall be putting it on ebay as it is and see what I can get.
Most likely a return to cheap french tat for now, at least till I can afford to buy a decent jap car.

You would be far better off breaking it for parts. If it was my car id just fix it though. Even if l was going to sell it.

I need to trailer it up to brum area, thats at least £100, then the cost of finding out the problem and whatever it is that needs doing. So probably going to be more than I want to spend, when I could use the money towards a vts/gti and use that as a track toy and save for a decent daily car.

| £500 for working car, or £500 for possibly working mr2....
Plus that would mean the mr2 has cost me almost £2k, over £1k in fixing it...

| so your going to pay 500 notes for a gti/vts? not exactly young cars now either...
I wish you the best of luck, but the simple answer mate is the same story with many cars that arn't your bogo 1.4 runabouts if you want a decent car then you have to accept you need to pay decent condition prices or it WILL end up being another MR2 in your case no matter what badge it has on the front/back.
personally look at decent VTR/quickys the money you'd save for a year on running one maybe enough to afford a decent version of the car you want later on and you shouldn't loose too much in depreciation as they have levelled out now.
My 2p worth of course

| I agree Rich, as you know.
Yes the GTI/VTS wont be a prime example but you know the cars and they are cheaper and easier to fix if something did go wrong.
As you said, 500 on a car that works or 500 on the MR2 that might not fix it. Just get shot then save and wait for the right time to return to one.

| Been offered a mk1 vtr in swap so far.
Best case is £250 for a reshim on my engine, plus cost of transporting the car there. Worst is a rebuild at £1000+.
If I get something cheap, that lasts a year then so be it, but at least a 106/saxo will mean i can do all the work myself. I know what ever I get wont be trouble free but will be cheaper to run than the mr2 has been so far.
This has been the most expenive car to run I have ever owned, and all my other cars have been French!
I can see the arguement to fix it but I just dont have the money or paitence with it now.
Im doing an oil change to see if that will affect the engine but if that fails then its going sold as seen.

| as above really, GTSChris is an approved trader on IMOC and MR2OC he doesn't sell tat...
rich have you asked if Tim @ TB can source you a replacement I can ask Nathan @ Mrtwos when i eventually pick my car up to see what he has knocking about?
Mr2s are always being crashed so theres normally a good supply of bits readily available, failing that check the MR2's being broken section on IMOC, TB Dev and MR2OC

| Dont really have the space to do an engine swap. We are more than likely moving in about 2 weeks, new place has no drive way If I buy something and keep this then its going to work and I will sort out something. Its just buying another car in the mean time. | |

| Well just done an oil change. It was rather black to say the least, and only got about 3 litres out. I think I boiled the rest at llandow...
Its sounding better and idling a lot better. The knock has reduced in noise but still there slightly. If it doesnt sell for what I want on ebay then I am going to get it towed up to TB Dev and get it looked at when I can.
And would get a vtr or some other shitbox till it is fixed.

| lol rich a £50 oil change before llandow probably would have saved it. Mr2 engines take a least 4 litres of oil so oil starvation could have played a part. I assume it was topped up to start the day? | |

| I had topped it up the weekend before. Didnt notice it going down on the day when I checked it.
Probably needs a reshell on the engine thinks TB Dev.
It finished on ebay on wednesday. If its not sold I am going to leave it at work and save for an engine.

| The car may have healed itself. Now starts fine, not knocking anymore(putting that down to a lack of good oil) and not doing the dodgey idle as far as i have noticed.
Im going to test it tomorrow for work and see if its ok still. Ive just done 20ish miles with no issues and its actually accelerating better now too.
It definately needs some new engine mounts as its rocking a fair bit now. And sounds a bit like a diesel so think something is still wrong but not bottom end.

| As I ahve done a few bits recently, here is some progress. Well here is what the oil looked like once drained... Now running fine again, bar the old idle problem, which hopefully cleaning out the throttle body will solve. Bit dark but rev3 boot fitted, with added gash black vinyl! Then today a box of goodies turned up. Then these parts got removed.... .....and left this. Oh and on Sunday found out Jimmy can fit in and drive an mr2, thanks to the uber rare rake AND reach facility on my car. In it... Loving it... Driving it... Pics of the exhaust tomorrow probably and the induction fitted, I forgot earlier. | |

| Ad did they come with the looms, forgot to ask?
Also the mr2 is currently in bits. Got home from work and when I went back out there was a nice water trail from the front of the car.
Radiator has finally given up.
Its now all off, just need to find out how much the aircon rad is tomorrow and decide if i am going to fit a new one or just lob some coolant and the rad back on.
Then hopefully the exhaust will be done this weekend and tyres arrive next week and its ready for combe.
